With so many different models and manufacturers of portable generators it can be a real headache trying to find the one that is best suited to your needs. Every day I have people contacting me for advice and information and so when a particularly good generator comes on the market, I write a review and publish it so that the information is easily available.
You might think that most portable generators would be pretty much the same but there are big differences between them in terms of ease of use and performance. While I rate the Yamaha EF2000iS portable generator as being the best 2KW portable generator, one model that stands out on both these measures in the 4KW range is the excellent XP4400E Portable Generator by DuroMax. Another reason for recommending this generator is that it is available at a very low price that makes it a very good investment.

Quick and Easy to Set Up
Duro have designed the DuroMax XP4400E to be easy to use right from the word go. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to unpack the shipping box. The only thing that takes a little time is removing the braces that support the engine while it is shipped. The first thing you will want to do is to place the XP4400E on a mat or cardboard on its back so that you can fit the wheel kit. This is a simple job but it is easier when you have two people to do the turning over.
With the wheels on it is a breeze to maneuver the generator wherever you want. As with all generators it is a good idea to try it out before you need to use it for real. Just add SAE30 oil, 10W30 is sufficient for warmer locations - for colder areas you should by accordingly. Now add some gas, turn the fuel valve on, put choke on and turn the key and it will fire up. That’s right, it really is this easy! The battery is shipped with enough charge to start it up. You also have the backup of the EZ-Pull Recoil start if you need to start it manually.
Maintaining the DuroMax XP4400E is straightforward. The main priority is to ensure that you change the oil at the recommended intervals, particularly when the unit is new.
Reliable Operation
If you live in an area that is liable to power outages or if for any other reason you rely on backup power, the top priority is a reliable generator and the XP4400E certainly fulfils that requirement. It will run for 8 hours on a single tank of gas when operating at half maximum power.
So whether you live in the middle of hurricane alley or in an area susceptible to ice storms, or just need a generator for recreational use, the XP4400E can be relied upon.
Amazing Output Power for its Size
Considering the size of the DuroMax XP4400E, it certainly packs a lot of power. The voltage regulation is also excellent. On a quick test it would power run a small portable AC, some lights, a refrigerator, a TV and various other items such as chargers without any trouble. It is also nice and quiet and if the generator is running outside the house you will hardly notice it.
The XP4400EPA is both CARB (California Air Resource Board) and EPA (environmental protection agency) approved.
Electric Start for Half the Price
With its electric start, it is difficult to believe that you can get this generator for less than $500. Considering the price the XP4400E cannot be beaten. If I was being picky I might say that it is a little louder than the Hondas such as the 3000i. But don’t forget that the 3000i will set you back many more dollars.
DuroMax XP4400E Has All the Features
The control panel provides two 120V outlets (20 Amp), and one 30 Amp outlet. The latter output can be switched between 120V and 240V. A great addition is the 12V outlet that you can use to charge a car battery. Other useful features include an engine shutoff switch, a circuit breaker and a voltmeter.
The XP4400 is powered by a durable DuroMax 7.0 Hp, air cooled OHV engine which has a low oil shutoff. The all steel 3.2 gallon fuel tank comes with an easy to read gauge. The idle control will hold the RPM at a constant level even when the generator is under heavy loads in order to provide both fuel savings and noise reduction.
